Starbucks
Creative Expression Website Development
Starbucks’ internal design team undertook an overhaul of their visual identity system in 2018–2019, and they wanted to build a website to capture the spirit of these changes and provide high-level guidance so other creatives could understand the new vision. The Starbucks team created a series of desktop-oriented designs for this creative expression website—including some uniquely playful animations and interactions—and Turnstyle helped solve the mobile responsive behaviors as we coded the site.
One of the trickiest parts of coding this site was determining how to create the interactive green dot on the landing page. It’s irresistible to interact with, responding to your cursor when you hover over it on desktop. But how should it behave on mobile phones where there’s no hover? And if the behaviors are different, how will the website know whether the user is looking at the site on a touch screen device or a desktop computer? What happens when the browser window is resized?
The Starbucks team’s vision for the site offered no shortage of creative and technical conundrums like this, but we loved the challenge.
